THE LA BRISE PHILOSOPHY: PYRS Fran with 6 week old "Pierzyn", now owned by Jacquie McLemore The ancestors of the modern Great Pyrenees were brought to France over 3,000 years ago. These ancestors came from the Middle East. Today there are still big white dogs in most European and west Asian countries. Over the generations, subtle changes occurred in the appearance of the breed as they adapted to the climate, terrain, and the work and values of their masters. These early breeders learned which traits were most desirable in their dogs, both physically and mentally. They noticed obvious things - the dog with longish legs, neck, and tail has the best balance and can run fast and fight well. They also noticed more subtle things - the dog with a black nose often has a more sensitive hearing than one with a light nose; the dog with a prominent back-skull has a better sense of smell and more courage than a square-headed dog. The Great Pyrenees has an esthetic perception of the world. Pyreneans appreciate kindness, gentleness, truth, and family. If a Pyrenees does not feel s/he is part of a flock or family, s/he may leave in search of his/her place, or s/he may develop behavior problems which can seem insurmountable - chewing, digging, barking, housesoiling, etc.. They also have a sense of humor. They are sometimes like children and frequently prefer children to adults. There is a certain kindred spirit. Tova & Isabelle The Great Pyrenees is very adaptable. Besides his work as a guardian he has been used for many things. He can pull carts and sleds and carry backpacks. He has been used in war as a search and rescue dog. One of his favorite jobs is providing therapy for emotionally disturbed, physically or mentally handicapped individuals. The Great Pyrenees has been in America for over 50 years. The purpose of La Brise kennels is to produce Pyreneans true to their ancient heritage physically and mentally. To this end, La Brise has used bloodlines from France, USA, and Canada, and dogs from La Brise can be found in USA, Canada and France. Everybody here at La Brise is, of course, very proud of our many successes. And we look forward to the continuing improvement of the La Brise Pyreneans.
